OBJECTIVES:

Psychomotor:

The students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate proper walking technique
  • Hike on trails of various terrain (hills, sand, dirt paths)

Cognitive:

The students will be able to:

  • Monitor exercise intensity with heart rate monitors
  • Identify benefits of hiking/walking,
  • Increase the intensity hiking/walking
  • Measure one’s own stride length and estimate distance travelled
  • Use pedometers
  • Analyze nutritional value of food
  • Understand how to read a trail map (orient the map, thumb and track)
  • Identify leaves on Long Island
  • List 10 national parks in the U.S.
  • Define heat exhaustion, heat stroke, hypothermia and dehydration
  • List hiking safety factors
  • List equipment needed for a day hike

Affective:

The students will be able to:

  • Understand the importance of fairness and honesty.
