Dear ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø-Brightwaters Community,

I hope that you were able to relax and enjoy the February Break with family and friends. It is hard to believe that the start of Spring Sports is just around the corner and the end of the school year is approaching.   

Over the past year and a half, the ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø School District has been closely monitoring developments pertaining to the South Shore Charter School, which was initially proposed for the Central Islip community. We have learned that the school will now be temporarily located in Ronkonkoma pending the availability of their permanent location at 267 Carleton Avenue, Central Islip.

The ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø School District remains adamantly opposed to any charter school that recruits students from our schools, including the South Shore Charter School. There is no need or demand for this type of school in our community. Such a school would not help our students, but rather potentially divert resources away from the programs that make ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø an exceptional place for students to learn and grow.

On Wednesday, March 1, 2023, at 6:00 p.m. the Islip Town Planning Board will consider an application by the South Shore Charter School to obtain a Special Permit for its proposed Central Islip location. The Planning Board Meeting will be held at Islip Town Hall West, 401 W Main Street, Islip. I urge you to contact the Planning Board and/or attend the meeting to voice your opposition to this application.
