K-2 Literacy Vision Statement

Literacy Collaborative is the framework used in all primary schools within the ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø School District. Literacy Collaborative is a comprehensive instructional model designed to provide a school-wide approach for improving the reading and writing achievement of all children. Literacy Collaborative ensures that every student will develop and demonstrate effective reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills by participating in high quality, explicit literacy instruction across all content areas.

The key components of the Literacy Collaborative model include on-site professional development, leading to the creation of a school leadership team, as well as a research-based instructional model, which aligns with the Common Core and Next Generation Learning Standards in English Language Arts and also meets the requirements of the Response to Intervention (RTI). Ongoing assessment is another important factor, and Benchmark Assessments, running records, and informal observations are measures that are used to monitor the progress of all our students.

Our primary schools offer Reading Recovery for those students who find literacy learning most difficult. It is a scientifically-based intervention that provides a safety net for students in grade one who, even while experiencing a sound literacy program, are having difficulty in the initial stages of learning to read and write.

Leveled Literacy Intervention is a scientifically-based system that is designed to address literacy difficulties, rather than correct long-term failure. It has been highly successful in achieving its goal of cutting across the path of literacy failure and bringing children to grade level performance.

Literacy Collaborative has a three-block framework in K-2. It consists of:

1. Language/Word Study: including interactive read alouds, phonics/word study

2. Reading Workshop: mini-lessons, guided reading, independent literacy work

3. Writing Workshop: mini-lessons, independent writing, guided writing

1. Literacy Collaborative is a researched-based instructional model, partnered with Lesley University for literacy teaching and learning. Our language and literacy framework for literature and content areas (K-2) is student-centered and provides many opportunities for authentic reading and writing, as well as focused work on the essential elements of phonics, word study, and oral language development. This provides a comprehensive literacy model for school change.

3. Underlying beliefs of the Literacy Collaborative Framework are:

  •  All students can learn to read and write through the Literacy Collaborative Framework
  • Students learn about written language in an environment that is print rich through the use of, but not limited to, interactive writing, shared writing, and student-generated charts
  • Learning is a social process through the use of, but not limited to, managed independent learning and small group instruction
  • Learning is a constructive process through the use of, but not limited to, conversations during interactive read alouds, guided reading, writing conferences, and managed independent learning
  • An organized environment supports the learning process through classroom management and established routines
