COVID-19 Grading Guidance For Students Grades K-5

Information for Parents

Purpose

The ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø School District acknowledges that trying to evaluate students’ academic performance during this unprecedented situation is challenging. COVID-19 Grading Guidance For Students Grades K-5 was developed to ensure that students would not be penalized academically by the closure of school during this public health crisis, as many academic and learning factors may be outside of our students’ control. The purpose of this document is to provide parents with information regarding the grading procedures teachers will refer to when determining grades for students for the remainder of the 2019-2020 school year.  Consistent with the ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø School District’s Distance Learning Plan (Phase II),  teachers are expected to regularly assess assignments and post grades in Infinite Campus for the academic tasks and assessments that are provided during distance learning, in a similar manner as they do during traditional instruction.

Third Trimester Grading

For the Third Trimester, K-5 students' final Domain overall grades will not be assessed with a numerical grade or an Academic Performance Standard (1-4).   Instead, students will receive a Pass (P) or No Grade (NG) for each academic domain (i.e. ELA, Math, Writing, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education, Music, Art).  The aforementioned will be determined by the completion of work submitted by a student and their overall participation in the distance learning experience provided to them.

Third Trimester grades will be determined for students based upon one of the following options:

  • PASS (P) - If a student is logging in consistently, handing in assignments, working towards and/or meeting grade-level standards, and demonstrating effort, he/she should receive a Pass (P) for the academic domain.

  • NO GRADE (NG) - If a student has not completed or submitted assigned work, a No Grade (NG) should be issued for the student.

The final grade for the Third Trimester is at the discretion of the teacher. If a parent has specific questions regarding the Third Trimester grade, the parent should consult the teacher. In addition to assigning either a Pass or No Grade for each academic domain, teachers will provide meaningful comments to parents to substantiate the child's learning and progress on Distance Learning.

Effective communication is essential to the overall success of ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø School District’s Distance Learning Plan.  It is imperative that throughout the remainder of distance learning, parents continue to communicate with teachers, social workers, and administrators regarding any circumstances that may impact the success of a child’s distance learning experience. In turn, faculty and staff will continue to contact parents of students who struggle to meet expectations for student engagement during the distance learning experience. If you have a specific question regarding COVID-19 Grading Guidance For Students Grades K-5, please contact your child’s teacher or building principal.  As always, thank you for your  continued support of ³Ô¹ÏºÚÁÏÍø.
