Junior English

(200 level)

1 credit

This is a Regents Exam-oriented course, which emphasizes how effective writing grows from close observation.  The writing of various types of fiction and nonfiction essays is addressed, as well as the basic methods of research.  In order to strengthen and expand reading skills, students in this course will read quality fiction and nonfiction, and will generate oral and written responses to those genres.


Junior English

This course is designed for scholars who have an above-average command of language skills.  Emphasis is placed on higher-level reading and writing activities, including research skills.  Focus is also placed on preparation for the New York State English Regents Exam and the SAT.


Grade 11 Humanities

Credit earned for Art, Junior English and U.S. History 11

The eleventh grade Humanities course integrates Art, English, and U.S. History in a manner that fosters deeper understanding of the curriculum.  The content of Humanities emphasizes skills which will prepare scholars for the NYS Regents Exams.  The course focuses on critical thinking skills, independent research, writing, artistic skills, and aesthetic application.  A team of three faculty members, one from each department, teaches Humanities in a double period.  One unit of credit in Art, English, and U.S. History is awarded respectively from each department.  Scholars in Humanities will take a Regents examination in both English and U.S. History.


Advanced Placement English: Language and Composition

(300 level)

1 credit

AP Language and Composition trains scholars to become skilled readers of material written across a variety of periods, disciplines, and rhetorical contexts.  This course provides practice and helpful criticism to make students more versatile writers.  It is open to Juniors who qualify through teacher recommendation.
